Drie Britse centrales zorgen in Nederland voor meer milieuvervuiling dan elf Nederlandse centrales bijelkaar. Het gaat om fijnstof, verzuring en vermesting in de Nederlandse natuurgebieden. Dat blijkt uit een onderzoek dat door TNO voor Natuur en Milieu is gedaan.

>> Three large British power plants contribute more to nitrogen and acid deposition and particulate matter (PM2.5) levels in most rural areas of the Netherlands than eleven large Dutch power plants combined, according to the findings of a study released on Monday.
The Drax power plant in Selby poses a particular problem. Although its individual contribution to pollution in the Netherlands appears small, it is significantly higher than that of Dutch power plants. The Kingsnorth plant in Kent is also a concern because it is much closer to the Netherlands. And Its SOx emissions exceed those of Drax.

The other installation monitored by Dutch consultancy TNO is the Aberthaw power plant near Cardiff in Wales. Its contribution to PM2.5 concentration levels in the Netherlands is smaller than for Drax, except for sulphate. Applying best available techniques (BAT) to these plants would help reduce Dutch pollution, says TNO.

The Netherlands Society for Nature and Environment, which commissioned the TNO study, and the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) are calling on MEPs voting on a revised Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) directive at the end of April to restrict proposed derogations from BAT as far as possible. <<

>> In opdracht van Stichting Natuur en Milieu heeft TNO onderzoek gedaan naar de bijdrage van drie grote Engelse elektriciteitscentrales aan PM2.5 concentraties en de depositie van stikstof en zuur in Nederland. Deze bijdragen zijn afgezet tegen de gezamenlijke bijdrage van de elf belangrijkste Nederlandse elektriciteitscentrales.

Significante bijdrage
Hoewel dit onderzoek is gebaseerd op gegevens van 2005 waarbij nieuwe emissiereductiemaatregelen niet zijn meegenomen, geeft het onderzoek een goede indicatie van de relatieve bijdrage van deze buitenlandse bronnen. Het blijkt dat de bijdragen klein lijken maar substantieel zijn. In Nederlandse landelijke gebieden is de bijdrage van deze 3 Engelse centrales samen van dezelfde orde of zelfs groter dan de gezamenlijke bijdrage van de 11 Nederlandse centrales. Dat betekent dat emissiereductiemaatregelen in Engeland, door invoering van Best Available Technology, een significant effect zullen hebben op de luchtkwaliteit en depositie in Nederland. <<
